At MCW Laser, we want to ensure you get the best performance and longest lifespan from your laser cleaning equipment. Two of the most common questions we receive from customers are: "Do I need an air compressor?" and "How can I power the machine outdoors?"
This comprehensive guide will provide everything you need to know about the Air Compressor and Portable Power Station (Generator) requirements for our laser cleaning machines.
Air Compressor Requirements
Is an air compressor necessary?
Yes. Whether you are using a Pulse or Continuous laser cleaning machine, connecting an air compressor is highly recommended.
Why do you need auxiliary gas (air)?
- Lens Protection: The airflow creates a barrier that prevents dust, rust, and debris from splashing onto and damaging the expensive protective lens.
- Enhanced Cleaning: The compressed air helps blow away the contaminants stripped by the laser, ensuring a cleaner surface.
- Cooling: Continuous airflow helps dissipate heat from the cleaning head during extended use.
Recommended Specifications:
To ensure stable operation, choose an air pump with the following parameters:
- Power: 100W – 1000W (Universal air pumps are suitable)
- Required Pressure: 0.4 – 0.6 MPa (The compressor itself should ideally reach 0.8 MPa)
- Tank Capacity: 12L or more
- Exhaust Volume: 100L/min
- Rotation Speed: 2800 r/min
Connection & Setup:
- Tubing: Our machines typically use a 6mm OD (Outer Diameter) air pipe.
- Adapters: If your air compressor outlet does not match, you can use a Pneumatic Quick Connector to adapt the sizes (see images below).
Pro Tip: Ensure your compressed air is dry and oil-free. Moisture or oil in the air line can contaminate the lens, leading to cracks or burn marks.

2. Outdoor Power: Generators & Portable Stations
For mobile or outdoor work where a wall outlet is unavailable, you have two options:
- Built-in Battery: Our P Series machines feature built-in lithium batteries for ultimate portability.
- External Power: Use a Portable Power Station (e.g., Jackery, EcoFlow) or a Fuel Generator.
Power Matching (The 3x Rule)
Laser cleaning machines contain motors and sensitive electronics that require a high "startup peak" power (often 3–7 times the rated power).
Recommendation: Your power source's Rated Output Power should be at least 3 times the rated power of the laser cleaner.

How to Estimate Runtime
You can calculate how long your battery will last using this formula:
Runtime (Hours) = [Power Station Capacity (Wh) / Machine Power (W)] × 0.8
Example:
Using a 520Wh capacity power station to run a 120W cleaner:
520Wh ÷ 120W × 0.8 ≈ 3.5 Hours
(The 0.8 coefficient accounts for energy loss during conversion).
Summary: Key Takeaways
- Protect your investment: A small investment in a quality air compressor saves you hundreds of dollars in replacement lenses.
- Check the Watts, not just Wh: When buying a generator, ensure the Rated Output (W) meets the 3x requirement, not just the energy capacity (Wh).
